This book is absolute crap (but). there are so many errors its not even worth skimming through.Although the PAT strategies are EXCELLENT. May seem basic at first, but if you use them, you'll learn faster. Even these have many errors so be careful.ONLY USE FOR PAT!!! ONLY ONLY ONLY USE FOR PAT!!!! - well worth the few dollars for the PAT section

First of all, this book is not as bad as others make it out to be. But I think people should realize that this book is NOT a complete guide for the DAT. The science review sections were condensed...very much like preliminary lecture notes. However, the PAT section was very helpful. I found the level of hardness on the real test very similar to the book's. What I suggest is you use Kaplan or TopScore (some very heavy duty review books) along with this book for the PAT section. Then, a few days before the test, flip this book open to go through the materials quickly to keep your brain in science mode. And, of course, constantly practice the PAT section. My prelimary PAT score was 13 when I signed up for Kaplan (which was useless btw), and with this book I got an 18 on the real PAT.

The best part of this book is definitely the PAT. It offers a lot of strategies and has more practice problems than other books I looked at. I also like the section they have in the beginning of the book for pre-dents, which offers advice on things like recommendation letters and interviews.The concerns that I have with this book are that I've seen the many complaints about mistakes in the answer key, and I can't tell whether I really got a question wrong or if it's a typo. Also, the math and science sections aren't sufficient. I wish that Barron's would update this, too, because it was published about 10 years ago, and I'd like to have most up to date study material possible.

...This book gave me some excellent pointers for the PAT. For the PAT review, I give it 4 1/2 stars (minus 1/2 a point for a few obvious errors of course.)If you're looking for a good science review, this book will not help AT ALL. Not only were a few things it said totally opposite of what my o-chem book said (eg Sn2 and Sn1 reactions), but the review itself is so short and vague that it doesn't help with the numerous details you have to know for the DAT. I strongly recommend an MCAT book - such as the Betz Guide ("Complete Preparation") - for science review. These books not only provide detailed review but also many, many practice questions as well as explanations for each one.This book does not solely focus on the DAT though, and I enjoyed it for the extra material it included such as sample essays and interviews with dentists.

I used this along with Kaplan and TopScore to prepare for the DAT. This book was helpful for the PAT section only. The PAT section offers several tips on how to finish the questions quickly and accurately. The perceptual section on the actual DAT was more difficult than in this book however, so I still didn't score as well as I would have liked, but I think this book helped some. For the price, it's worth buying for the PAT section, but look to Kaplan for better science review, and topscore for better practice tests. The practice tests in Barrons are worth doing to get a feel for the types of questions, but they are all on paper, which is much different than a computer, and also cross-check every question you are unsure of with a textbook; there are numerous errors! The last comment I have is that the reading sections in the book are not very representative of the types of passages on the real DAT. Nearly every Barrons passage focused on some study or detail within the field of dentistry with which I was unfamiliar making them difficult to follow. On the DAT I had questions about broader topics in science that were much more familiar from my college science classes and thus easier to follow.

I have been going through this book and recently took a practice test. I was incredibly frustrated to find out that there are numerous mistakes in their answer keys. There were several answers that I knew for a fact were correct and upon checking my answers to information in recent text books, I was indeed correct and the answer key was not. It is very annoying to pay money for a test preparation tool just to find out that they did not take the time to double check everything. The information contained in the book before the practice tests is helpful, especially the PAT section, but don't waste your time with the tests unless you want to look up every answer to verify whether or not your answer is correct. Stick with Kaplan or other big name test preparation books.

Ok, this is the first book I bought because I thought, this can help.It doesn't. You might as well get a 6th grade bio book and read that, which would have more information than this book. This book gives you one-line facts about things that you seriously need to know in-depth for the DAT.As mentioned by another Amazonian, the PAT is probably the ONLY reason to get this, and it's probably a poor reason because this book has sooo many typos. It's not even the typos that makes me so disgruntled... the book will answer questions with wrong answer! or it'll provide you with 2 "right" answers, but choose the lesser true of the two.i.e. How does a catalyst work?There was an answer of "Lowers Activation Energy," which should be right, but was not! ummm, are this is for the DAT?Sure, the title says "How to prepare for the DAT." Yeah, this only prepares you to PREPARE for the DAT.

I must concur with the other reviewers. This book is loaded with mistakes, particularly in the science and math sections of their two practice exams. It was extremely frustrating to doubt whether YOU were wrong or whether the BOOK was wrong when reviewing your answers to the exams.Furthermore, their science and math review sections were extremely paltry. Buy an MCAT test prep book for the sciences and a GRE book for the math review.The only saving quality of the book is that it is one of the few sources that provide a practice PAT section. For me, that made this book worth the purchase.-david
