Kurt Boxdorfer aims "The Inside-Out Speaker" at burgeoning speakers, whether it's just a dream of sharing your to a local organization or speaking on the big stage. He covers a lot of ground in the 5 short chapters. Most importantly, if you are in his target audience, this is a very good book to read.I am a big fan of chapter one, pointing out the distinction between "Supportive Communication" and "Constructive Dialogue," where the former is the nicety you share with strangers while the hard-hitting truth of the latter is required to get better. I will be using this distinction going forward.Chapter two covers insecurities many beginning speakers have. This chapter seemed targeted for people who are not yet speaking, or those speaking because they have to. I do not feel an affinity for these issues, but the advice is something I will refer others to read.Chapters three and four are solid advice about connecting with the audience in real and memorable ways. Something every great speaker does and the beginner often forgets.Chapter five talks about the anti-thesis to his suggestions, the "outside-in" speaker. I'm not sure why this is the closing chapter, but the advice Kurt gives in the latter part of the chapter is again worthwhile.Then we have a Bonus Chapter and an Appendix. The idea of a bonus chapter confuses me, but the Appendix is worth the cost of the book alone. It is a checklist every speaker should read about Intentions, Authenticity, Emotions, and Memorable Moments.Kurt's jungle metaphor throughout the main chapters doesn't add much to the book, but they are only a minor distraction from his primary points. If you're new to the stage, or speaking at small venues and unsure what to do next, then I recommend this book for the tips that will help you get to the next level.

Clearly Kurt has keen powers of observation having watched and worked with speakers. The Inside Out Speaker offers powerful information about really connecting with your audience, being authentic and so much more.There is such a tendency to listen too much to what others think you should be saying. I think this book is for anyone who has to speak - not just professionals. If you have a presentation of any sort this book is a terrific guide.

“Everyone has a message, but there are very few who are able to communicate that message. And there are many books, and now videos, that claim to be able to aid in this task.Kurt Boxdorfer joins this crusade with a flanking maneuver. This comment has a shading of war, because the industry of producing books for the purpose of teaching students how to speak before an audience has been reduced to trench warfare.Boxdorfer does not approach public speaking from the old tactic of writing a “How To” book. Neither does he attempt to show his readers a plan of developing each message before it is delivered. Finally, this book is not a large textbook with the history, development, and discussion ad nauseam about a topic which has been bludgeoned to death by the same old bat, over and over again.Kurt addresses all speakers with a simple step of taking what you have said, listening to those who will critique the way you have said it, and realizing the feedback, both good and bad, can be a tool to get better at communicating “your” message. This is accomplished by a very easy read. But, being an easy read does not condemn his book to the gallows of fluff material.Because of Mr. Boxdorfer’s unique book, many speakers, both novice and pro, will know who to listen to, when the listener gives their feedback.I have been a public speaker for nearly 55 years. I would have gotten better, quicker, if I had not had to learn his truths by trial and error. I highly recommend this book to everyone and anyone who knows that they have an important message to convey.”

I've worked with Kurt several times in the last few years on live event video shoots. Iv'e always been impressed with his videography skills, and admit I was quite surprised when he handed me this book that he wrote on what it takes to be a better speaker. Five minutes into reading it, I couldn't put it down. I honestly was impressed, as he takes his 25 years of experience witnessing speakers on stage, and boils down the top attributes that separate the mediocre from the best. As recent inductee in the the Speaker Hall of Fame, I credit much of my success to working occasionally with speaker coaches and my constant desire to hone my skills. I am also quite critical of most "speaker coaches", as I have heard many. That being said, this book digs into the core fundamentals of what it takes to connect with an audience and deliver a program that not only touches the head, but the heart as well. Written in a direct and conversational style, the book is packed full of easy to implement tools and techniques to elevate one's platform success. It not only reinforced what I have been doing, but it also revealed some areas that I need work on. A breath of fresh air in a speaker training world full of the same old speaker techniques, I definitely will recommend this book to any speaker looking to elevate their presence and performance on stage.
