This is a decent book though I'm disappointed a little. First off the print is tiny, even for me in my 20's! I don't believe this to be an encyclopedia but more like a story book. I thought it was going to be like a real encyclopedia being able to turn to a certain letter and see that particular bike. It's the first motorcycle "encyclopedia" I bought. Don't let the product description get you psyched out.

This book is a welcome addition to my library but it has some irritating flaws, the main one being the author's infatuation with Harley Davidson motorcycles. Don't get me wrong - I like HDs and I've owned HDs but the author is so enamored with Harley's that he has even convinced himself that their flaws and quality issues are pluses. On the other hand, he criticizes other brands of motorcycles for the very things he praises HD for.The first half of the book is a overview of many different makes of bikes, some of which I had never heard of before which makes that part interesting. He devotes anything from a paragraph to a few pages to the non-HD big names today in almost a dismissive way. Then, he gets to the subject he like most - HDs. The entire second half of the book is strictly HD worship. And some of the information he provides is inaccurate. For example, he claims that HD is the oldest motorcycle brand in continuous production. That simply isn't true! That honor goes to Triumph which produced it's first motorcycle in 1902, one year before HD produced their first motorcycle. Apparently, the author mistakenly believes that Triumph went out of production when it went into receivership in the 1980s but production did continue at an admittedly small pace during the interim before the new Triumph Motorcycles, LTD. was up and running. HD had it's hard times too but the author doesn't count that.The book is large and heavy making it a nice coffee table book. It's also well-illustrated. That said, it'll be appreciated most by HD owners who want to read nothing but good things about their brand. There are better books that cover all brands of motorcycles in a more balanced way.

I got this as a present and it has been very interesting reading. I have been through it, cover to cover, about three times. The front matter is an introduction to motorcycles and is not too exciting, although not without interest. The really good part is the A-Z of motorcycles, which introduces some rare brands I had never heard of. (I began riding in 1964, and I grew up with a number of the bikes in this book. So I was familiar with the names of Greeves, James, Francis Barnett, and many of the now defunct English manufacturers. But I had never heard of Bõhmerland!)The latter part of the book is dedicated to Harley-Davidson. The sections on the history of the company and the development of various models was interesting. I didn't find the parts about the Harley lifestyle to be too exciting.My tastes tend to prefer British bikes over others, and I currently ride a 1999 Triumph Tiger. For specific marques, there are many more detailed books (e.g. Roy Bacon on Triumph, Alan Cathcart on Ducati). But, as a general reference, I have not seen a book to match this one.Keep the helmet side up!
