About the Author

REGINA LOUISE is the author of Somebody’s Someone, which chronicles her journey through foster care. The one-woman stage adaptation of the book debuted at the Sacramento Theatre Company and was nominated for two NAACP Theatre Awards. Her story, which is in film production, has been featured on All Things Considered, the BBC, and The Early Show, among others. Louise is a leadership coach in human services, a Hoffman Process teaching candidate, and the winner of an Adoption Excellence Award from the Administration for Children and Families. She is also a trauma-informed trainer who advocates on behalf of foster youth and their emotional permanency. She lives in Northern California.

This is an incredible story. I read this book in two days. I could have read it in one but because I can identify so much with the story and the author I needed to take a breather before I finished the book. Regina shares her story of living in foster care, feeling unwanted by her parents, feeling unwanted by everyone and how that affects a child. How the system works and medicates "the lost children" or the children no one wants, rather than understanding why they have the behaviors they have and working to help them deal with those issues so that they can heal and be a contributing member of society. The neglected or abandoned children are hurt more by what the "state" calls medicating problem children or children they see as having behavioral problems. they refuse to acknowledge how a young person deals with the affects of desertion, no love, neglect, abuse and/or insecurity because of all of these factors. Regina shares her personal story which is never the perception or the view we hear about. These children are grouped together as one big problem - they are disciplined and drugged rather than being listened to and loved. They have to get through the system and the adults that can't help them and help themselves once they are old enough to escape that life. Not everyone can do it. Regina is a hero, telling her story is so courageous. Reading her story will help so many people, adults and children, be able to survive this kind of life by knowing they are not alone. This has happened to someone else and they lived through it. they made it and you can make it to. It is hard but it makes you strong. When you live through this type of life you see and are enlightened. People like Regina who are able to tell their story lift the rest of us up and give us hope. She shares her strength with her words. She is my hero.

After the last two books I read, both personal stories of a sort, neither one particularly compelling or accurate, this book is a welcome breath of fresh air.As a child, Regina Louis suffered horribly through abandonment and several foster placements, but she describes the experiences deftly, and with a poetic touch, complete with the emotional scars they left her.While not personally familiar with the U.S. foster care system, I can relate, as we adopted our second child at the age of four in Hungary after he had been abandoned, left in an orphanage for six months and left in a highly abusive foster care situation for two years. He, too, was beaten, and he came to us with scars both physical and emotional. Whether the result of early abandonment, abuse or inadequate nutrition, it eventually emerged that he had also suffered brain damage in his formative first four years.To read here about how this woman coped with all of that kind of hardship, physical and emotional abuse, and to see how incredibly bright, articulate and loving she turned out, is an inspiration.As hard as this memoir may be to read in parts, it is a stark and honest look at the horrors of child abandonment, and an inspiration to everyone who has come through a similar experience to believe in G-d and believe in themselves.This book proves, as I have always believed, that one small act of love can change the world. And often, it does.Brilliant. Positively brilliant.

As a foster parent I find myself drawn to stories such as this, written by those who have grown up in the foster care system. It is so important that their stories get told - we as a society need to learn from our mistakes and see what happens to these girls (and boys). We need to fix families, fix the system and people who have the ability need to step up and bring these kids into their homes and give them a family. Also, we need to have more grace, love and compassion for those who have hard pasts. I appreciate Ms. Louise for sharing her life story. It inspires me to continue finding ways to help children in foster care and I hope that others will read it and be inspired as well.
