Just holding the book and looking at the cover, as Snow had so often done with the objects of his life's work is profoundly satisfying. Who does not flip through the pages, looking at the pictures prior to commencing the book? So many of Peter Mauss's pictures captivate, perhaps none more than the two pages on the Garden fence, in Vermont's famous autumn (pages 36-37). I suspected that I was being "set-up" for a disappointment in the text, but Snow far exceeded my expectations in a wonderful series of tightly crafted, informative vignettes that span the practical to the deeply philosophical.Like his stone structures, there was a wonderful balance to his vignettes, from the tools of his trade, to the design of his structures, to the philosophical implications of his work, and our place in the universe. Who could ever pick up a mundane level again, without reflecting that "without that which is missing, what is there cannot be measured." There is a wonderful "archer's pavilion" inspired, in part, by the Battle of Crecy in 1346. Other reviewers stated that this is not a "how-to" book, and yes, in a Home Depot sense it is not, but for the concepts, and practical aspects of construction the chapter entitled "Portal" is hard to beat - and the capstone had to be a wonderful find for Snow.Dan Snow is a native of Vermont, deeply rooted to his time and locale, born fifteen miles from his great-grandfather's birthplace. Yet he is very much a citizen of the world. In those unlikely connections, he created a wonderful stone garden inspired by one in Kyoto, whose inspiration came from a Japanese student that he had in Helsinki, Finland. He has also made a "pilgrimage" to Aran, the islands off the west coast of Ireland, not revealing the insider reference to Tim Robinson's books on same. His section on the Gallarus Oratory, also in Ireland, is equally impressive. Other inspiration has come from visits to the Lofoten Islands off the coast of Norway, and the Romansh area of Switzerland.And there is the irony. Here is a man whose life has been a lonely journey to maintain a ancient tradition whose craftsmen are now severely diminished in number. Others have commented on the quality of the book, the paper, and the pictures, but none have pointed out the "Printed in China."On a personal note, I have visited 49 of the 50 states - the elusive one, alas, has been Vermont, now, more than ever, a mandatory destination before shaking off the proverbial mortal coil. One aspect of Snow's work that he did not discuss was the "support" that he had from his compatriots - their willingness to see the importance of his work, enough so to commission projects. How unique is this to Vermont? Could he have done it in Peoria?Overall, a wonderful book, and a wonderful life. There is yet more to tell, and I hope he does.

Please judge this book by its cover for the title conveys with its contents. The author not only brings life to stone, he brings poetry. The pages are an equal mix of "how to" projects, including where to source stone and the philosopical implications of moving stone out of its natural setting for man's pleasure. You not only learn some of the joys and challenges of stone masonry but by the end of the book really want to work in the field or have dinner with Mr. Snow.

This makes a good companion to Snow's other book about building stone walls.The allusion to another kind of stoning (a la Shirley Jackson's iconic short story) is an unfortunate mistake by a careless editor. Stones have a beauty all their own, and this book makes it clear how to appreciate the medium as an observer or a builder. Would make a good gift for a gardener.

I liked this book so well I bought 2 of them. Accidentally. I found it in a tourist trap at a ridiculous price, then bought it here. As much a philosophy book as a construction book.

Great book - that is earmarked and highlighted, for my reference. It is definitely a resource book as I build stone planters in the spring!

Reconnect with the genius of the ancient, environmentally sane builders and architects! Serious students not just "gardeners"! Go buy it!
