Trina Robbins grew up in Brooklyn, New York. Her mother, a second-grade schoolteacher, taught her to read at age four. She says, "It is the greatest gift anyone has ever given to me." My 1st grade daughter recently did a report on Bessie Coleman, and this was one of three books that she referenced for the report. First, Bessie Coleman is an amazing figure in history and her life captivated the attention of my daughter - she's now an expert (for her age) on the life of Bessie Coleman. This book gets into a fair amount of detail compared to other books on the same subject for this age set, so it was the last of the three books that my daughter and I read together for her project. The format of a graphic novelization really held my daughter's interest, though I believe that if we'd read this book first before reading more simplified accounts of Bessie Coleman's life, the amount of information would have been a bit overwhelming for a 6 year old. In all, a great book about an exciting hero - my daughter and I highly recommend it!
My students love nonfiction and they love biographies - this book brings them both together. The comic book format presents the facts on Bessie Coleman in a fun and entertaining way, so that even students who wouldn't normally pick up a biography are more likely to read one. I have purchased many books in this series, and plan on purchasing more.
I can say all the good things I have said of the other Graphic Library collections. Chapter structure, thematic thread, accessible to comprehension instruction strategies, vocabulary at grade level, and excellent graphics. Like the Amelia Earhart, this one starts the story with the first panel, where Bessie communicates the kind of person she is, not an Uncle Tom. I could recommend any of these stories.
...Charles Lindbergh was indeed America's aviator hero, however; from this woman's point of view...Bessie Coleman is my real hero...As our country will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Marchn on Washington at the end of this month much discussion will be centered on Martin Luther King and his dreams...However; out on the front lines have been woman like myself who have been fighting for equal rights and equal pay for women too long.Aviatrix Bessie Colman fought discrimination also...She however was fighting on two fronts, instead of one-being a woman and black..(Great read for this summer...half hour at the most...Bessie Coleman -Daring Stunt Pilot by Trina Robbins available on Amazon)She had one other strike against her...She came from humble beginnings...but my she walked 9 miles everyday to school just to learn how to fly...and the saddest part of her story she had to take pilot lessons in France, because no one in America would train a black woman to fly....We've come a long way but we need to go further...Sheryl Sandberg, CEO, Facebook...has called woman to action...Next President 2016, will be a woman...
