The events described in this book are incredibly tragic. The story is a work of fiction but the terrible events were all too real. The plot revolves around a young Jewish boy attempting to elude Nazis, who will leave no stone unturned in their vicious quest to capture Jews. The boy's grandmother emerges as a figure of great strength and courage, as does the young boy himself. They are forced into hiding in caves along with other Jews, including other women and children, as they are ruthlessly hunted by the Nazis, who are intent on murdering these innocents. The relationship between the boy and his grandmother is close and loving. Each risk their own life in order to save the other, but in the end their love is not enough to protect against the violent hatred of the Nazi beast who has made it his personal mission to destroy them.

I purchased this book for my grandson who is a fan of Mr. Spradlin's work. I picked it up myself before I connected with him and started reading. I could not put it down. While my own generation has not had to endure what these individuals lived through, Mr. Spradlin brings you right into the war. You feel the terror, the anger, and the hopelessness. A fabulous read.

My 4th-grade son found this in the school library, and he loved reading it -- the hero is a young boy to whom he can relate, and there's lots of action and suspense, woven around historical facts of World War II.When he finished, he wanted more, so we checked out what else Michael Spradlin has written, and it turns out there are several other EXCELLENT books for boys in the 9-13 age range, mostly based on historic events, and all featuring boys as heroes.. Now my son is reading "Prisoner of War," and likes it even more -- Spradlin has a fan here!

I was tutoring a 4th grader, and we often use books to work on literacy skills. I felt this book was too "heavy" in subject matter for him, and we didn't finish. When Rena and her son were so brutally murdered, we stopped.

My 9-year old daughter loves this book! She was never into historical fiction, but fell in love with it when my 11-year old son was assigned to read it for school. Right away, she asked for a copy to keep at home. A very well-written story.

My young grandson who is very interested in World War II asked for this book, he absolutely loved it. Would recommend.

Fast paced story with lots of action with heartfelt characters. Great read for anyone who likes WWII. Highly recommended for boys or girls.
